The Lumberjack Story
The new recruit answered, "No. I can't take the time to sharpen my ax. I'm busy trying to cut down this tree."
Many new MLM distributors suffer from the "dull ax" syndrome. They set goals, work hard, but never reach the success they desire. Why? Because they never took the time to sharpen their "ax" by learning new, effective skills. These distributors waste effort, waste resources, and waste their careers. If only they would take a little time away from their frenzied futility to learn the skills that would serve them for a lifetime.
As MLM expert Tom Paredes says, "You need training even if you get a job at McDonald's flipping hamburgers. So why not expect to invest some time and effort in learning new skills for a career in multilevel marketing?"
What happens when new distributors venture into multilevel marketing uninformed? Let's go back to our new lumberjack.
It seems the new lumberjack finally got tired of beating his dull ax against the tree. In desperation, he went into town to the local hardware store. The manager of the hardware store said, "Yep. Your ax sure is dull. But, if I were you, I wouldn't get the ax sharpened. There is a new way of cutting trees that is even better than a sharp ax. It's called a chain saw."
"Just give me that chain saw and I'm outta here," said the new lumberjack. He took the chain saw and disappeared into the woods.
Two days later the new lumberjack returned to the hardware store. He was sweaty, had blisters on his hands, and looked very depressed. He found the store manager and said, "Hey you. You sold me this chain saw and promised me better results. I've been slaving away in the woods for two days and still haven't finished cutting down my first tree!"
The store manager replied, "Well son, just hand the chain saw over here and let me see what the problem is." The store manager examined the chain saw and saw nothing wrong. Then he grabbed the starter cord and gave it a big pull.
"B-b-b-r-r-r-r-r-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-m-m-m-m-m!" The chain saw belched some smoke and began to run.
"Hey! What's that noise?" the new lumberjack exclaimed.
It seems that the new lumberjack never took the time to learn the features or even how to use his new tool.
The same is true in multilevel marketing. One must not only acquire new tools, but also the knowledge on how to use them. And, in this rush, rush society, it will take some discipline and time investment to perfect one's new business-building skills.
The payoff?
Almost anything you want. All you have to do is be willing to change. After all, Michelangelo changed from painting floors to painting ceilings when he got the Sistine Chapel job. The same new opportunities await you with your brand new multilevel marketing skills.
An experienced lumberjack walked past one of the new recruits. The new recruit viciously chopped away at the large tree but only managed to bruise the bark. Spend less than your earn - invest the difference.
This is the only way you can accumulate the money for your investment fund. Your money can't work for you if you don't have any money to put to work.

Sure, it takes a bit of sacrifice to put away $100 a month, $200 a month, 10% of your salary, or whatever you decide is right for you. But by sacrificing a little bit every month, you'll have all the money you want for years and years and years.

It is said:
"A penny saved is . . . not very much."
That's probably true. However,
"Saving 65 cents a day in pocket change will add up to tens of thousands of dollars over time."
Consider this. It's almost impossible to become rich by spending more than you earn. Most people spend more than they earn. Most people aren't rich.

Use a part-time job or a part-time business to add more money to your investment account.
By adding this extra income, you'll cut years off your personal plan to wealth. Getting rich quicker is good, right?
Use people leverage to add more money to your investment account.

You can turbocharge your journey to wealth by employing other people in your part-time business or by taking advantage of network marketing.

Buy things that appreciate. Don't buy things that depreciate.
Stocks, mutual funds, and real estate appreciate over time. That means your money is working for you. Stereos, fancy clothes, automobiles, and big screen televisions depreciate over time. That means you are going backwards - that you are losing money. That's not the way to get rich.

Own your own home.
Renters and homeowners both make payments every month. You won't get rich collecting rent receipts. You get rich by owning real estate.

Get a good tax accountant.
You want to minimize your taxes so that you'll have more money working for you in your investment account. Your tax accountant can show you ways to reduce, defer or eliminate taxes on your investments. You can reduce the effects of taxes on your extra income by investing through IRAs, Keogh plans, 401s and other tax-favorable investment vehicles.
If you are really worried about paying taxes on the extra money you are earning, simply work a few extra hours for the taxes or arrange to have extra taxes taken out of your regular paycheck.

Avoid debt.
Some types of debt are good. An example would be the mortgage on your home (assuming you've bought a home within your means). This is debt on an appreciating asset.
Most debts are bad because you are paying interest on that debt. Paying interest is having your money work against you. It is robbing your investment fund of valuable capital that could be used to work for you.
Worst of all is paying interest on a depreciating asset such as an automobile or stereo. Not only are you losing money by paying interest, but the item you are paying for is also losing value at the same time. That is what's called a "double whammy."

If you have a lot of debt siphoning away your salary, maybe the first place for you to invest your investment money is in reducing your debt. This will ultimately free up more money in your monthly budget that you can put into your investment program.

Start young - or as young as you can.
That means start now. Let time work for you, not against you. The longer your investment fund grows, the more money you'll have. Even if you invest very conservatively, time and the magic of compound interest will serve you well.

Don't be someone who says,
"Oh, I wish I started ten years ago. Look where I would be today."
"I should have invested in McDonald's and Chrysler stock back in 1972."

The past is past. You can't redesign your past. However, you can design your future.
So start designing your future today. Ten years from now will arrive whether you start saving and investing or not. The choice of what you'll say ten years from now depends on what you do today.

Protect your investment fund by reducing risk.

What good is it to save your money, only to lose it later on a speculative risk? It's better to have a lower return and all of your investment fund than a higher return and sleepless nights worrying about your money.
Certainly all investments have some risk. You'll want to keep your risks to a minimum while looking out for good returns.
You can invest your extra money monthly in a mutual fund, in real estate, to reduce your personal mortgage, or even in your own part-time or full-time business. Your investment risks decrease with knowledge.

Have patience.
Your investment fund won't grow rapidly overnight. Consistent investing will give you good returns in the long term. For example, when is the best time to invest in stocks?
The obvious answer is to invest at the beginning of a long bull market (rising prices). Since no one can accurately tell the future, the best time to start investing for most of us is right now. Obviously stock prices go down also. But a stock portfolio that goes down in price is worth much more than never investing or saving a cent.

Investors who have become rich in stocks have invested over a long period of time. That includes up markets and down markets.

Handle your finances like an adult.
How do four-year-olds handle money? Do four-year-olds use their allowance wisely - or do they spend it quickly on something they want? Usually they insist on spending their allowance the same day they receive it. Saving or creating an investment fund is the furthest thing from their mind.
If you handle your money like a four-year-old, you'll have the savings account of a four-year-old.

Don't worry about inflation.
Inflation will occur whether you save money or not. So why not save money? You'll like inflation a lot better when you have a large savings account.

Can't seem to find any money to start your investment program?
Try this. Now I'm not asking you to budget. I'm only going to ask you to keep track of where your money goes for 30 days. Here is what you do.
Take a blank register from your checkbook. Simply record every expense, every dollar you spend for one entire month. Write down when you buy a pack of gum, a pack of cigarettes, a soda, when you pay the VISA bill, when you buy that sandwich or movie ticket.
At the end of the month, review your register. Look at all the miscellaneous expenditures you made that could have been turned into investment dollars.

Will you do this? Only if you are serious about becoming rich.
I've seen people who earn $10,000 make regular contributions to their investment fund. I've also seen people earning $100,000 a year spend $110,000 a year and go bankrupt.

Saving money has nothing to do with how much money you make. It has everything to do with personal commitment.
And now it's up to you.
Now that you know the rules, your personal wealth is not dependent on chance. You can make the choice to be rich, to retire wealthy, and to have the time of your life!

How many people like making cold calls? The majority of us feel uncomfortable calling people for many reasons. Is it because we are afraid of the phone? If you have teenagers, chances are you can't get them off the phone. So what changed over the years? Do we now associate the phone with "sales" and "rejection" instead of a friendly tool to we use to share ideas and stories?

One reason people don't like calling prospects is that they don't want to come across as a salesperson, especially when contacting their warm market. Most people don't want to hear the word, "No." Imagine your new distributor making that first call and getting a "No!" Talk about squashing their confidence!

The first thing we need to realize is that people join sponsors, not companies. They join you because they know, like and trust you. And in order for someone to join your business, you should be using some type of relationship-building tool.

Creating prospects is the life-blood of your business. A few opening statements you can use to interest your prospect before offering them a copy of the book:

"There might be something of interest in this book for you…"

"I know someone who just read a book on that…"

"You need to make more money? Great, what's your plan?"

Use release statements -- like ...

"This book may or may not work for you…"

"It may or may not be what you're looking for…"

. . . so that your prospect feels it's OK to say "No." Doing this will result in fewer 'no shows' and having to do fewer call backs.

Instead of saying, "Read it and I'll get back to you," (which implies a salesman might come calling) say, "Here's a book that could help with your family finances."

How do you hand them the book? Use your left hand, your right hand, however you want -- it's up to you!re you hesitant to approach your co-workers about your network marketing business because it might be viewed as a 'conflict of interest'? Instead, have them approach you about your business first!

Have Potential Leaders Take Them Right Off Your Desk!

Ever see the candy on someone's desk disappear in less time than it takes to run to the water cooler? You can apply this exact same 'bait' principle to turn these candy thieves into hot prospects!

How to Neutralize Negative Friends & Relatives
Ever have a new distributor lose his enthusiasm about his network marketing business because his best friend said it was an illegal scheme? Or maybe his mother told him that nobody could succeed in one of those deals. Or his brother shared the story of how Uncle Bob lost all his money filling his garage with useless products in a similar program. Or his cousin still remembers your new distributors first business experience the time his lemonade stand failed when he was five.

Let's face it, in most cases the last people we want our new distributors talking to are their close friends and relatives. By trying to protect their friend, they tend to become 'dream stealers.' This negativity can spread like a disease all over your distributor. You'd better provide them with a cure, or better yet a vaccine against the virus. Don't risk losing them for good!
Have your new distributors give the book to their friends and relatives. Let the book explain to them why your new distributor has started a home-based network marketing business. Double, Even Triple the Response Rate To Your Notification Letter!
"This week someone you know will be presented a network marketing opportunity by someone else, because you didn't notify them of yours."ometimes your new distributors don't want to talk to their friends because their friends might make fun of them. Their relatives will give them rejection, and their co-workers will just laugh if they tried to sell them network marketing. People don't want to pass out brochures in the middle of a wedding. They don't want to impose themselves on their co-workers. A lot of people say, "Gee, I don't want to talk to my warm market, I'd rather talk to some strangers."

Well, we know the only reason people join is they know, like and trust us. The natural market we have is the people we already know. It's easy networking because they trust us.

We let people know that they have one obligation, and one obligation only when they start this business. They're not obligated to drag all their relatives to an opportunity meeting. And they're not obligated to go to training or to take people to training a couple times a week either. They're not even obligated to give presentations to people they know. They don't have to memorize scripts or flip charts or anything like that. They're not obligated to pass out brochures.
They only have one obligation and one obligation only

We like to use a notification letter. It notifies everyone in the new distributors' warm market that they've chosen to start a home-based network marketing business and explains why. How many people like making cold calls? The majority of us feel uncomfortable calling people for many reasons. Is it because we are afraid of the phone? If you have teenagers, chances are you can't get them off the phone. So what changed over the years? Do we now associate the phone with "sales" and "rejection" instead of a friendly tool to we use to share ideas and stories?
One reason people don't like calling prospects is that they don't want to come across as a salesperson, especially when contacting their warm market. Most people don't want to hear the word, "No." Imagine your new distributor making that first call and getting a "No!" Talk about squashing their confidence!
The first thing we need to realize is that people join sponsors, not companies. They join you because they know, like and trust you. And in order for someone to join your business, you should be using some type of relationship-building tool.
The How to Get Rich book is a low-key approach, explaining the benefits of network marketing. It is just one system of building a downline and just one way of prospecting. Creating prospects is the life-blood of your business. You can have the best company, the best products, and the best compensation plan but if you don't have anyone in your group then you probably won't be getting a very big commission check.

. . . so that your prospect feels it's OK to say "No." Doing this will result in fewer 'no shows' and having to do fewer call backs.
Instead of saying, "Read it and I'll get back to you," (which implies a salesman might come calling) say, "Here's a book that could help with your family finances."
How do you hand them the book? Use your left hand, your right hand, however you want -- it's up to you!re you hesitant to approach your co-workers about your network marketing business because it might be viewed as a 'conflict of interest'? Instead, have them approach you about your business first!
Have Potential Leaders Take Them Right Off Your Desk!

Ever see the candy on someone's desk disappear in less time than it takes to run to the water cooler? You can apply this exact same 'bait' principle to turn these candy thieves into hot prospects!

How to Neutralize Negative Friends & Relatives
Ever have a new distributor lose his enthusiasm about his network marketing business because his best friend said it was an illegal scheme? Or maybe his mother told him that nobody could succeed in one of those deals. Or his brother shared the story of how Uncle Bob lost all his money filling his garage with useless products in a similar program. Or his cousin still remembers your new distributors first business experience the time his lemonade stand failed when he was five.
Let's face it, in most cases the last people we want our new distributors talking to are their close friends and relatives. By trying to protect their friend, they tend to become 'dream stealers.' This negativity can spread like a disease all over your distributor. You'd better provide them with a cure, or better yet a vaccine against the virus. Don't risk losing them for good!
Have your new distributors give the book to their friends and relatives. Let the book explain to them why your new distributor has started a home-based network marketing business. The book justifies that it's a good deal. The friends and relatives don't have to join but at least they'll understand... it'll neutralize those well-meaning relatives and act as a vaccine against this potentially lethal rookie-distributor-killing virus.
What's Your Marketing Budget?
What would happen if you got 100 people to read the book? Remember, that's 100 people reading the book and not just 100 books handed out.
Take a moment and give your best guess to the following four questions:
How many people, after reading the book would say, "It's garbage, I want to be poor?"
How many would say, "I can't think anymore, I'm too tired after reading the book?"
How many would say, "That's nice?"
How many would say, "Let's talk about this, I'm a HOT prospect!"
The only question that really counts is the last one. A pretty conservative answer to the last question is "10." Ten out of 100 people who have read the book say, "Let's talk about this. Show me what you are doing to make an extra paycheck every month."
At a cost of only $1.38 per book, when was the last time you got 10 hot pre-qualified prospects for only $138? In most cases you can't even run an ad for that, not to mention the follow-up costs!
What if you have a smaller marketing budget for your network marketing business?
Simply invest in ten books and circulate them. Just show the book to people that you talk to and ask them, "If I let you borrow this book, would you spend 30 minutes reading it?"
If they say, "Yes," let them borrow the book and pick it up a week later.
If they say, "No," and can't spent 30 minutes reading a book on how to get rich, what are the odds they will be willing to build a list, read the distributor kit, go to a meeting and so on? Odds of them becoming one of your leaders at this time are slim to none. You just saved yourself a whole bunch of time by not prospecting this person any further.
Prospects Will Get You Referrals Without Even Realizing They Did!

It's easy. Hand them a few extra copies of the book and ask them to do their friends a favor. "Pass along this book to anyone who might be looking to make some extra money. If you run out of books, call me and I'll get you a few more."
The next time they hear someone say, "I wish I had more money," they can say, "Great, what's your plan?" And they can provide them with a plan by giving them a copy of the book!
And here's the best part. The next time you see them, they'll probably ask you for more books to give to their friends. That's the perfect time to share with them the principle that, "Most people do network marketing every day, but they just don't get paid for it." You see, now they've actually experienced for themselves how easy it is to do network marketing!
Double, Even Triple the Response Rate To Your Notification Letter!
"This week someone you know will be presented a network marketing opportunity by someone else, because you didn't notify them of yours."ometimes your new distributors don't want to talk to their friends because their friends might make fun of them. Their relatives will give them rejection, and their co-workers will just laugh if they tried to sell them network marketing. People don't want to pass out brochures in the middle of a wedding. They don't want to impose themselves on their co-workers. A lot of people say, "Gee, I don't want to talk to my warm market, I'd rather talk to some strangers." Well, we know the only reason people join is they know, like and trust us. The natural market we have is the people we already know. It's easy networking because they trust us.

ASWe let people know that they have one obligation, and one obligation only when they start this business. They're not obligated to drag all their relatives to an opportunity meeting. And they're not obligated to go to training or to take people to training a couple times a week either. They're not even obligated to give presentations to people they know. They don't have to memorize scripts or flip charts or anything like that. They're not obligated to pass out brochures.
They only have one obligation and one obligation only
We like to use a notification letter. It notifies everyone in the new distributors' warm market that they've chosen to start a home-based network marketing business and explains why. If you incorporate the How To Get Rich Book into the notification letter, you get an increased response. More people who are interested in making extra money will clearly state to your new distributor that they are a hot prospect. People are much more willing to ask for a copy of the book than call and admit to you that they need to make an extra check every month because they simply aren't making ends meet.
On the following page you will find a sample copy of a notification letter that you can use in your business right away! Make sure that your new distributors have a few extra books on hand, because they will get calls from people who would like a copy! Along with the book they can include a note saying something like, "I've also enclosed a bit of material detailing the home-based business I've chosen to help me put a few extra hundred dollars in my pocket every month."
We recommend that you personalize the letter as much as you can. We've included an actual notification letter that pulled 14 responses out of 40 letters sent. Notice how Monique used our notification letter as a template and then personalized it.

It is a matter of perspective
Texas and Oklahoma are bitter college football rivals. There's no middle ground.

One day a Texas football fan was driving through Oklahoma on his way to another state. (Texas football fans never drive to Oklahoma, they only drive through Oklahoma to get somewhere else.) The Texas football fan stops at an Oklahoma gas station to refuel.
A little girl walks by and suddenly is attacked by a vicious pit bull. The dog tears her dress and grabs her arm. The Texas football fan sees the screaming little girl and runs to her rescue. He grabs the pit bull and struggles valiantly. The dog tears into his flesh. Blood streams from his arm and leg. Finally, in a desperate move, the Texas football fan gets the upper hand and kills the pit bull.
A reporter for the Oklahoma Times Newspaper watches the drama unfold. After the pit bull is dead he approaches the Texas football fan and says:
"Wow! What a hero! This will make great headlines in tomorrow's paper. Let me take your picture and ask a few questions."
The Texas football fan wipes the blood off his arm and leg and has his picture taken.
"We'll put a great headline and story under your picture in tomorrow's paper," says the reporter. "Maybe, the headline could read, Hero Saves Little Girl. By the way, where are you from?"
"From Texas," says the hero.
The reporter thought for a moment and replied, "Well, since you're from Texas I guess we could change the headline to read: Man Rescues Child. I can kind of overlook that you're from Texas, but tell me, you at least root for the Oklahoma football team, don't you?"
The Texan replied, "No. To tell you the truth, I am an avid Texas football fan."
The reporter left to write up the story. The Texan decided to stay around for a day so he could read his headline and story in the next morning's paper.
The next morning, the Texas football fan picks up the Oklahoma Times Newspaper and on the front page was the headline:
Man Kills Family Pet!

It's a matter of perspective. Not everyone looks at opportunities and events the same way. While you may think you are offering a tremendous opportunity to a prospect, the prospect may see the presentation as a thinly veiled attempt to take his money.

Empathy: Identification with and understanding of another's feelings, situation, and motives.
Would you like to increase your closing percentage? Use empathy.
Would you like to increase your group's motivation? Use empathy.
Would you like to understand why people respond the way they do? Use empathy.

Great MLM leaders don't sell, they understand.
When giving a presentation, they try to present the opportunity from the prospect's point of view. If the prospect has experienced a bad situation with high-pressure salesmen, the leader gives advice and options. If the prospect is worried about his daily living expenses, the leader emphasizes the possibility of immediate part-time income. If the prospect is afraid of what his friends will say, the leader shows how the prospect can market to strangers.

To understand how effective empathy can be, imagine if a salesman used empathy to understand your point of view.
Let's say you were a prospect for a MLM opportunity. You sincerely want a part-time income, but also want quality time with your family. Compare the following two presentations:

Presentation #1
"You'll just love this MLM opportunity. You get to go to rallies, trainings, opportunity meetings, conventions, and presentations in prospects' homes and our weekly idea session. I've been in this opportunity for over a year now and I can't think of anything else. I'm doing this business 24 hours a day. You'll love it too. It will become a obsession."

Presentation #2
"You'll just love this MLM opportunity. It only takes a few hours of quality time per week. We have many successful leaders who set aside six hours a week for presentations and group building. This leaves them plenty of time to enjoy their family, friends and other activities. MLM is great because you can set your own hours."

Since your goal was part-time income and quality time, which presentation would appeal to you? It's easy to see that Presentation #2 had empathy while Presentation #1 only showed self-interest.

Empathy works for recruiting presentations, but it works even better when trying to develop MLM leaders. Let's say you want to develop Mary into your next superstar leader.
Why not find out a little about Mary's background? Is she conservative or liberal? Does she want to earn big money fast, or is she willing to build long-term? Does she want an aggressive upline sponsor and an aggressive promotional campaign? What's happening with her personal life? Is her job fulfilling or boring?

In other words, find out what Mary really wants and help her achieve it. When the upline leader and the potential leader operate on the same frequency with the same goals and strategy, magic happens. That's why some MLM leaders can develop leaders and inspire loyalty while other MLM leaders never seem to get anyone beyond a dependent distributor level.

It's just like the Oklahoma Times Newspaper reporter. He saw things completely different. Succeed in MLM by seeing things through other people's eyes.

Are You A Rock and Roll Star?
Did you write that musical hit that the world couldn't resist? And because of your musical talents, do you receive a music royalty check in the mail for thousands of dollars each month?
No? No musical talent? No skill at writing hit records?

Well, are you a famous novelist?
Are you interviewed on all the television talk shows? Do publishers bid record amounts of money for the rights to your next mystery novel? And, because of your captivating writing talent, do you receive thousands of dollars in royalties from your publisher every month?
Or, do you own a couple million dollars worth of high grade stocks and bonds? And, every month do you receive a dividend check for thousands of dollars, conveniently sent to you from your broker?
Or, did you arrange to be adopted by a rich family? And did that family leave you thousands of dollars in monthly inheritance income from their many trust funds?
Or, do you have to work for a living?

If you are like most people, you have to work for a living. If you don't work, you don't get paid.
What's different in the above examples? Well, if you were a successful rock star, novelist, rich investor, or lucky heir, you would receive money every month even if you didn't go to work. That's called residual income.

What's residual income?
It's a lot different than linear income, the kind most people have. You see, linear income continues only as long as you continue the work.

If you are a surgeon, you get paid whenever you perform a surgery. If you don't perform a surgery, you don't get paid.
If you are a construction worker, you get paid when you work. If you decide not to work for the next 12 months, chances are your employer is not going to pay you.
If you drive a bus, you get paid. If you quit driving buses, you don't get paid.

That's how linear income works. You receive income when you work. When you stop working, the income stops coming.

Residual income is different.
The best way to describe residual income is that when do something right just one time, you get paid over and over again for what you did.
So, you wrote a hit song ten years ago. Every time it plays on the radio somewhere in the world, you get a little royalty. Even though you completed writing your song ten years ago, every month you receive a royalty check from people who play your tune. You did it right one time, and now you collect every month.

When you wrote that hit novel five years ago, you finished your work. Now, you receive regular royalty checks from continuing sales of your book from your friendly publisher. You did it right one time, and now you collect every month.

You invested the few million dollars you had lying around in your checking account six years ago into high grade stock and bonds. Now, every month you look forward to your monthly dividend checks. You did it right one time, and now you collect every month.

You called every duke, queen, business magnate, and rich sports star twenty years ago and asked to be adopted. Finally, one accepted your proposition. Every month your inheritance check reminds you that the adoption letter campaign of twenty years ago really paid off. You did it right one time, and now you collect every month.

Residual income sounds nice, doesn't it? Unfortunately, most people have trouble developing a residual income.
Why? We can't sing or write music. We don't have publishing contacts for our hit novel. We don't have a few million dollars sitting in our checking account waiting to be invested. And, worst of all, we can't find any rich people in failing health ready to adopt us.

TGIF Gold Card technique.
Last week a friend and I had lunch at TGI Friday's, one of my favorite restaurants. The waitress had only one thing on her mind:
Getting me to sign up for the TGIF Gold Card.
First she asked me,
"Do you have a Gold Card?"
When I said I didn't, she spent three minutes explaining all the frequent eater benefits of having a TGIF Gold Card. I told her that I wasn't interested, but wanted to order something to drink.
When the waitress returned with the drink order, she reminded me that the TGIF Gold Card was free, and that she would even help me fill out the simple application. I wasn't interested, and insisted that she take our order for food.
While waiting for food, the waitress checked the status of our drinks and reminded me that I would get 500 points just for signing up for the TGIF Gold Card. Then I would get ten points for each dollar spent at TGIF's.
I asked,
"And what do I get for the points?"
She answered,
"You can redeem the points for free appetizers, desserts, and even a cruise."
A cruise? Now I was paying attention.

"So how many points do I have to accumulate for a cruise? One million? Two million?"
She didn't know, but reminded me that she could help me fill out the application while waiting for our food order.
I declined.
Finally, the food arrived. The waitress continued:
"You know that you get one free appetizer just for signing up for the TGIF Gold Card, right? It's free. I know you'd love a free appetizer."
I caved in.
"Yes, a free appetizer would be nice to go along with our meal today. Could you bring me the menu so that I could choose an appetizer?"

The hook.
The waitress smiled and replied,
"Oh, you don't get the free appetizer now. You get your free appetizer the next time you visit any TGI Friday's restaurant."
Now I understood why the waitress was so persistent. I'm sure that a supervisor had lectured the staff that no one leaves TGI Friday's without a Gold Card. It was the new corporate policy. Everyone had to get one.
Why?
Repeat business.

Fear of loss motivates people. It's powerful. It works.
Think of the examples in your life where "fear of loss" was much greater than your "desire for gain."
For example, let's say that a husband would like to impress his wife (desire for gain). He goes to a flower shop, asks somebody to chop off some nice flowers and wrap them up in a pretty bouquet. He then stops by a chocolate shop and picks up a box of assorted chocolates.
If his spouse is not totally suspicious of this spontaneous gift of dead flowers and chocolate . . . well, there is a pretty good chance of some public relation points (desire for gain).

And how often does this happen in real life? How often does the husband spontaneously give flowers and chocolates?
It has yet to happen.
However, imagine that the spouse kicks the husband out on the street for taking her for granted. The "Fear of Loss" factor immediately kicks in and the husband rushes to the flower shop and the chocolate shop.

"Fear of Loss" is always greater than the "Desire for Gain."
So what is TGI Friday's strategy?
I now have a TGI Friday's Gold Card. I will lose my free appetizer if I don't go back to a TGI Friday's and eat again.
They have guaranteed my repeat visit.

And how much does a cheap plastic membership card cost? A cent or two.
And how much does a free appetizer cost? Less than a dollar.
TGI Friday's has now guaranteed that I will come back, probably bring one or more people with me, and I'll spend $40 to $100 on my next visit.
All for the total cost of one measly dollar.

Pretty neat, eh?
But it gets better. They got my email address too from the TGI Friday's Gold Card application. I'm sure I'll be receiving email offers of "Buy one order of buffalo wings and get the second order for half price."
